Is your hosting provider Rapture Proof?
As you are no doubt aware, May 21st 2011 has been widely publicised as the day of The Rapture. If these predictions are correct, hosting companies in predominantly Christian countries are expected to have serious staffing problems come Sunday. So, the question everyone should now be asking their hosting company is "What preparations have you made for The Rapture?".
For those unfamiliar with The Rapture, I'll explain what you should expect. Some time on 21st of May 2011, Christ will return to earth to gather up all true Christians. He will take these Christians away with him to live in Heaven. All atheists, agnostics and non-christians will be left on earth to await the earth's ultimate destruction in a few months time.
Leaving aside for a moment the ultimate destruction of the earth, it seems that for many hosting companies, the issues arising from The Rapture itself have come as a complete shock. In spite of many prior predictions of the "End of Days", the majority of providers seem to have made no plans whatsoever do deal with this eventuality. Can your hosting provider guarantee business continuity after The Rapture?
Armageddon
We all remember the the big publicity push at the end of the last century that helped us prepare for the "Millennium Bug". Although many laughed a those building bunkers and stocking up on baked beans, we should not forget what we gained from that experience. We prepared ourselves and we got through it. On this latest issue, due to a complete lack foresight many businesses reliant on cloud and hosted services are going to suffer their own IT Armageddon on May 21st.
What we are doing?
Netservers customers can however rest assured that we are prepared for the coming chaos. We have ensured that among our staff we have atheists, agnostics and other non-christians in key positions. We are taking no chances. One example of our belt-and-braces approach is that those staff not intending to take part in The Rapture have been told never to eat fish on a Friday.
However, this is not something that we as a company do pull off on our own. We have made sure that all the way up the supply chain, from the Internet Transit providers to the company that supplies diesel for our generator, there are sufficient numbers of non-believers and indeed sinners to ensure that things go smoothly for our customers after The Rapture,
The End of Days
The final destruction of Planet Earth itself is predicted to occur on 21st October 2011. What plans do Netservers have for the End of Days you may ask? Well, we've all heard of cloud computing. You may also be aware that Nasa has been involved in an open-source cloud computing project called OpenStack. Netservers have taken a great deal of interest in the OpenStack project. I can't say much right now, but when it comes to operating outside the confines of Planet Earth, Nasa are the kind of people we should all be talking to.
